Nine individuals indicted for attempted homicide, false testimony: public prosecutor's office
"As announced in a press release on Wednesday morning, the public prosecutor's office has indicted nine further individuals in the ongoing Bommeleeër affair.
The investigating magistrate saw a total of ten suspects between mid-May and mid-July, according to the press release. One of the suspects, the former head of the Gendarmerie's mobile brigade, Bernard Geiben, was not indicted following the judge's decision.
The Bommeleeër affair concerns a series of bomb attacks in Luxembourg during the 1980s. Whilst the judge found Geiben innocent, the nine other suspects have been accused of being involved in the affair. Five former leaders of the Grand Ducal Gendarmerie have been accused of being perpetrators or accomplices of the attacks following the attack of 19 October 1985 targeting the courts in Luxembourg.
The press release claimed that the subsequent attacks of 9 November 1985, 10 November 1985, 30 November 1985, 2 December 1985, 16 February 1986, and 25 March 1986 occurred thanks to the 'protection, advice, and direction' of the five accused. The five will be tried for attempted homicide, assault and battery, arson, and violating a number of laws concerning distributing electric energy and the use of weapons and munitions. The five accused will also respond to accusations of false testimony in criminal matters and obstructing the justice in events after 10 July 2011.
A further three former investigators for public safety have also been indicted for false testimony in criminal matters concerning the surveillance of Geiben in Brussels. A final former member of the Gendarmerie's mobile brigade has also been indicted for false testimony in criminal matters, concerning his declarations about the attack on the casemates beneath the Plateau de Saint Espril on 5 July 1985.
The public prosecutor's office explained that the investigating team charged with the file carried out a multitude of additional reports, writing a total of 103 separate reports. The number does not count summarising reports and verifications that took place abroad.
The investigation will continue and the public prosecutor's office highlighted that at the current stage, it is 'premature' to see the case go to trial. The indicted individuals remain presumed innocent until proven guilty."
