24 maart 1983 in Florennes
This file picture dated 24 March 1983 is about the Euromissiles crisis. In 1977, Soviet Union equipped itself with middle range missiles thanks to a loophole in SALT I agreements (missiles which could reach Europe). NATO reacted by a double-track decision: first, the organization asked for a mutual limitation of medium-range missiles; then, in case of disagreement, NATO would deploy missiles in Europe. In October 1983, as Soviet Union had installed new missiles, weapons were deployed in Europe. On the picture: a demonstration against the installation of missiles at Florennes (Namur, Belgium).
