Is dit de eerste warenhuisoverval van de Bende? Ik zeg niet dat onderstaande overval het werk is geweest van de Bende van Nijvel maar het is het onderzoeken waard. De datum en de modus operandi zijn in elk geval interessant.

Dit feit gebeurde nl. enkele dagen voor de car-jacking van de Austin in Elsene (waar twee gewapende mannen opereerden) en de diefstal van de Santana in Lembeek. De daders in Anderlecht liepen te voet weg. Ook in Dinant in april 1982 verdwenen de twee daders, al naar gelang de getuigen, te voet. Beviel hen deze overval en hadden ze daarna wilde plannen gemaakt om nog wel eens een overval te plegen maar vonden ze het te voet vluchten een te groot risico? Hebben ze daarom besloten om enkele dagen later dan maar een auto te stelen?

Warenhuis overvallen: 100.000 frank

Donderdag [6 mei 1982] om 18u50 zijn twee gewapende kerels een klein warenhuis 'Dial-Budget', Steenweg op Bergen 207 te Anderlecht, binnengevallen. Ze eisten er het geld op van een kassierster en dwongen drie klanten op de grond te gaan liggen. Daarop begaven ze zich naar het kantoortje van 'Dial-Budget' en verplichtten ze twee personeelsleden de brandkast open te maken. Ze ontkwamen te voet met een buit van circa 100.000 frank.

Nog een interessant weetje, voor wat het waard is natuurlijk: de winkelketen 'Dial-Budget' (kleine superettes aan democratische prijzen) was een onderdeel van de Delhaize-groep. Zie o.a. dit artikel van Le Soir » www.lesoir.be

Was the Dial-Budget Robbery a warm-up for the Insane Killers?

A few weeks later, on Thursday, May 6th, two armed men come through the front doors of a small grocery store called Dial-Budget in the Brussels suburb of Anderlecht at 6:50 p.m. The intruders demand money from the cashier and force three clients to lie down on the ground. The men then go to the grocery's back office, where they force two store employees to open the safe. No shots are fired, and no one is hurt. The robbers leave with a loot of 100.000 BEF and flee on foot. There is no getaway car.

It is important to note that Dial-Budget is a niche grocery store that is part of the supermarket giant Delhaize's chain of stores. What's significant is that this is the first time a grocery store in the chain is ever help up in Belgium - despite being a small grocery store it shares some similarities with the layout of the lager Delhaize supermarket outlets.

The robbery is not widely regarded to be part of the Insane Killer canon of crimes; however, the modus operandi is strikingly similar to the pattern they'll use in their later attacks. The robbery happens early in the evening. The intruders go to the cash registers first, where they force everyone to get down on the floor. They then head to the back office to force employees to empty the safe contents into a bag.

But there are also differences to the later crime spree of the Insane Killers, notably that no shots are fired at the Dial-Budget and no one is hurt. Like the earlier Dinant rifle theft, there are only two perpetrators, there's no getaway car, and they flee on foot. This Dial-Budget robbery happens in the western suburb of Anderlecht, which is outside the zone of their later attacks.

Without definitive proof, this robbery cannot be placed in the Insane Killer canon. Unfortunately, because no shots were fired there is no ballistic evidence that the same weapon was used to commit this robbery as was used in known crimes of the Brabant Insane Killers. However, the similarities could show that two members of the Insane Killers were involved with grocery store hold-ups much earlier than originally believed. It would also show that some of their earlier crimes were motivated by profit, not violence.
